The exiled media ecosystem is fragmented. Language barriers, geographic location, internal capacity, resource scarcity, and the lack of a permanent space to share firsthand experiences in an environment that fosters trust, are some of the reasons for such fragmentation.
Considering this, the Network of Exiled Media Outlets (NEMO) created a series of Knowledge Exchange Sessions last year. In this virtual program, representatives of these organizations can learn how their equals tackle the managerial, business, editorial, and personal challenges of running outlets entirely outside their home country or in a hybrid dynamic.
These monthly meetings are an opportunity to identify solutions to problems that can be adapted to the particular context of an exiled media outlet, think outside the box, and get to know colleagues from other parts of the world more deeply. NEMO believes that the most effective solutions to empower exiled media and make the sector more resilient come from these kinds of spaces.
Help us improve our program
Having completed the first round of Knowledge Exchange Sessions in 2024, NEMO is interested in discussing how this peer-to-peer initiative can better serve the exiled media sector. Therefore, we invite exiled media outlets attending RightsCon to participate in an in-person roundtable discussion on February 27 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Taipei time, in room 202A.
During the first twenty minutes of the roundtable, NEMO’s coordinator will explain the nature of this initiative, the lessons learned, and the results of the first round of knowledge exchange sessions. In the remaining forty minutes, we will invite participants to provide feedback based on their experiences and advice on adjusting the sessions to their needs.
NEMO will invite the media organizations participating in this round table to join our 2025 Knowledge Exchange Program. They will not only be able to participate but also lead sessions to share their experiences, find solutions to problems, and create new products to serve their audiences. We hope that some of these outlets can join the network and actively advocate for the needs of the exiled media ecosystem.
What is NEMO?
Founded in 2022, NEMO is a network of exiled media organizations that actively share knowledge and best practices to more effectively and efficiently provide independent, high-quality journalism to populations without access to a domestic free press. The network was constituted spontaneously and voluntarily to create a more resilient and better-represented exiled media sector.
In the spirit of knowledge sharing, NEMO has published an exiled media toolkit in partnership with IJNet, a project of the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ); seven podcast episodes with key information about managerial experiences; and continuously updates a blog with inspiration and resources for exiled media organizations.
The current NEMO members are Confidencial (Nicaragua), the Democratic Voice of Burma (Myanmar), El Toque (Cuba), Meduza (Russia), Meydan TV (Azerbaijan), and Zamaneh Media (Iran). In addition, six exiled media outlets from Afghanistan, Belarus, Eritrea, and Russia, are actively collaborating with NEMO through Knowledge Exchange Sessions and other forms of peer-to-peer initiatives.
